Fowlers Gap Landscape Painting Workshop

Immerse yourself in the semi arid zone of Fowlers Gap for an intensive and fun week focused on painting and drawing directly from nature. drawing and painting. Artist Nicole Kelly will openly share with you her approach and practice, offer instructive, practical demonstrations and expose the participants to a variety of ideas and approaches.
As an intimate group of a maximum of 12 participants, we will be focusing on working plein air as well as in the studio and will be digging deep into the world composition, colour, the illusion of space and so much more. The workshop will include formal and informal discussion with plenty of time to paint, have the opportunity to make some monotypes and enjoy the delicious food and magical location during our week together.
Fowlers Gap is the only research station in the arid zone of NSW. Located 112 kilometres north of Broken Hill, the 39,000-hectare property was established in 1966 and has been extensively used by researchers from UNSW and other institutions in Australia and overseas.
Some areas of the site have been continuously monitored for more than 30 years, providing a unique, long-term ecological record that earned the Station a place on the Register of the National Estate in 1996. A wide range of research on the birds, kangaroos, reptiles and other flora and fauna has been carried out as well as projects in areas including management of the arid zone, soil conservation, solar energy and astronomy. The remote Station, with its impressive landscape, eco-trails and wildlife-viewing platforms, attracts artists as well as local and international visitors.
Workshop Details
Dates: Monday 16th September to Sunday 22nd September, 2024
Six Day + Six Night Workshop Tickets: Starting from $3700 + GST. All meals and accomodation included (please note prices vary depending on your choice of room, please see below for more details - payment plans are available.) A $500 deposit required to secure your booking.
Location: Fowlers Gap Research Station, NSW (one hour and a half north west of Broken Hill).
Start Time: 10:00am on the Monday, with a tour of the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery.
Suitable For: The workshop is open to all levels, from beginners to those with a more experienced practice. Nicole works closely with everyone, guiding you within the parameters of your abilities, and to new levels. You’ll be encouraged to try new approaches, build on existing skills, pursue your own visual style and aesthetics, and develop a critical language around painting practice, all within the impressive Fowlers Gap landscape.
This workshop may not be suitable for individuals who find it challenging to navigate rough, uneven terrain.
Please Note: Airfares and transportation to Broken Hill are not included.
Accommodation
There are two forms of accommodation available during the trip, Cottage One and the Quarters, allocated on first in basis. One room will be allocated per person. Sheets, pillows and towels are provided.
Cottage One is a self contained 5 bedroom cottage full kitchen, tea and coffee facilities, shared bathroom facilities, air conditioning, a gas heater and a wrap around balcony that can double as a painting studio.
Cottage One Cost: $3900 + gst
The Quarters has seven twin rooms each off a long balcony. Each room has air con, two single beds and one room will be allocated per person with access to a shared kitchenette and tea and coffee making facilities and shared bathroom facilities. The Quarters has a large common room and dining area that we use as the studio during the day.
The Quarters is where we'll meet up at the end of every day for meals and drinks.
