On a trip out to Fowlers Gap, in remote NSW in 2020, three friends, artists Nicole Kelly and Ashley Frost and cook Lauren Forlonge wondered how they could open to a broader audience days of painting and rich discussion shared over meals. It was here In The Field Artist Workshops was born.

Our aim is to share the knowledge of our practicing artists, provide high quality learning and help our students develop creative problem solving skills. Coming together each day around the dining table to learn about each other, share stories and enjoy some delicious home cooked food in the hopes of building a diverse and global creative community.

We hope to see you In The Field.

The In the Field painting workshop at Fowler’s Gap with Nicole, Ash and Lauren was a wonderful trip on many levels. The exposure to art talk and instruction, the delicious meals, the fun and friendly artists, teachers and assistants and spending time drawing and painting in the ancient and awe inspiring landscape of Fowler’s Gap created a truly memorable experience.

Had the best time with Ash and Nicole during our workshop at Fowlers Gap. The landscape was incredible and we had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the experience of plein air painting along side both Ash and Nicole. The feedback during our painting was constructive and we learnt so much during our discussions after dinner. I can't wait for the next painting adventure with these guys. Did i mention the food...excellent!!!

I loved the variety of landscape at Fowlers Gap, big vistas, intimate creek beds with gnarly gums, and fields of wild flowers. Nicole and Ash gave us a balance of structured and free time both plein air and in the studio, with good constructive feedback, and Lauren restored us all with delicious food throughout the day. A wonderful authentic immersive art retreat, I am filled with inspiration, thank you!

I had a wonderful experience at Fowlers Gap under the guidance of Nicole Kelly and Ash Frost . We had a great mixture of plein air and studio time . Every day we went to a different location to paint . I enjoyed the two demonstrations monoprints and mixed media . The food was amazing with a wide range of dishes cooked every day. Would definitely recommend In The Field Artists Workshops.

Art making in the outback of Australia was a rare and important experience for me. Fowlers Gap has a legacy of great artists who have done exciting work there, Elizabeth Cummings, Idris Murphy. The team, Nicole, Ashley and Lauren plus helpers Mark and Dom made everyone welcome and provided for our needs. A memorable experience that will inform my art practice into the future.

There are so many things to consider to make a successful Art trip and Ash and Nicole were thorough in the planning and implementing of the event. They shared their knowledge generously - in a way that participants felt both extended and inspired. Having the ability to experience a unique landscape in this format was a treat and I am forever grateful for the opportunity.
